Valley Cup Weekend 9-25-2021…

Every year (except the one we missed because of COVID in 2020), Cedarcrest Red Wolves take on the Mt. Si Wildcats. Madelyn has been blessed to get to be a part of the team those 3 years of her high school soccer career. Yesterday her team was able to keep the cup by winning 4-3 in a very tight and fast-paced game. Check out the pre-game (It’s Soccer Night in the Valley, ladies style. The Valley Cup is on the line, but really, tonight is more about than just bragging rights. Pre-Game:

But guess what? These are all fundamental elements of what Cedarcrest’s program is under their veteran head coach, Alex Hickox. CHS is 3-2-1 on the season after a 3-2 loss to Snohomish Thursday. Hickox hasn’t as of yet posted a game report from that contest but suffice it to say this is a group that is definitely out to a good start. Senior Madelyn Davidson leads CHS and had three assists in their 5-3 win Tuesday over Marysville-Getchell that opened the week. Davidson, like Simmons and Forrest with the Wildcats, is a multi-sport athlete, also likely to be part of the girls’ basketball and track and field teams with CHS before this year is out.

Post-Game:

Led by a pair of goals from Madelyn Davidson, including the game-winner, Cedarcrest outlasted Mount Si 4-3 in a well-played match by both sides. “Wow, just like our match vs. Marysville-Getchell on Tuesday night, this one would come down to who had the ball last and would the score get into the double digits or not,” Cedarcrest coach Alex Hickox told us by email.
Things started out fairly early in this one as CHS took a quick 2-0 lead. Elisa Piira pounded it home in the 11th minute to open the scoring, off a rebound of a shot from freshman defender Lila Wilkins and she was followed up a few minutes after by Davidson’s first tally of the night. According to Hickox, his team prepared well for what Mount Si would bring to the table. “I thought we did a great job of unbalancing Mount Si with moving the ball from sideline to sideline. This (Davidson) goal was typical of one of our strategies on the night. The sequence leading up to this goal was exactly what we talked about during our pregame talk,” he told us. “I thought we also kept Amy Jenkins under control. We knew that their offense went through Jenkins. We control her, we control their offense. Jenkins has such a deft touch, great soccer IQ, can use both feet and is great off the dribble,” Hickox added.
Cedarcrest senior goalie Natalie McCabe made sure her team went into the lead at halftime, too, as she made a spectacular highlight-reel save of a shot by Mount Si’s Paris Price just before the halftime whistle sounded, and that set the tone for the second half. After McCabe made another quality save, CHS almost found paydirt with a shot, but it sailed wide. Then, in the 48th, Bubba Huard fired a shot but Red Wolve sophomore defender Molly Teakell blocked it in the penalty area. Unfortunately for Teakell, the ball hit her in the arm resulting in referees calling it a “handball in the box” allowing for Mount Si to attempt a penalty kick. It was a tough break for Teakell, a break made even tougher when Jenkins made no mistake on the resulting PK attempt to tie proceedings at 3-3. But Davidson answered in the 61st minute taking a feed from Melanie Cammarano and blasting the ball past Henretig to put CHS back in front.

Very exciting game with lots of energy and excitement.
