The closeout reports from the SnoValley Sports Journal included:

As for the Red Wolves, CHS comes in off a 5-2 loss this past Saturday to Burlington-Edison, who advanced to the district title game blanking Sehome last night and showing perhaps why the Tigers should have been seeded at the top of the table in the district computer rankings. Madelyn Davidson had the two Cedarcrest goals, but we’d look for “Mad Dog”, the senior bound for Idaho, to get most of the Anacortes defensive attention tonight, so this means the Cammarano’s – Melanie and Leah – will need to step up, and also keep an eye on freshman Sadie Schaefer as well tonight.

Cedarcrest started things off needing extra time to beat Anacortes 3-2 in their loser-out Northwest 2A District match. Madelyn Davidson scored two goals including the “golden goal” overtime game-winner as the Red Wolves had to rally from an early deficit to get the win.

er
Good Wednesday morning. It was a successful night on the pitch for local high school soccer in more ways than one last night as both Mount Si and Cedarcrest High Schools kept their girls’ soccer seasons alive with playoff wins, and the community stepped up in a big way to support the family of a Red Wolve freshman player battling tremendous adversity following a recent auto accident.

Cedarcrest started things off needing extra time to beat Anacortes 3-2 in their loser-out Northwest 2A District match. Madelyn Davidson scored two goals including the “golden goal” overtime game-winner as the Red Wolves had to rally from an early deficit to get the win.

Anacortes scored the opening goal despite the Red Wolves controlling play out of the gate in this one. “We dominated the first 10 minutes – passing was on, movement off the ball was right, our touch was good but as with other matches this year, we just didn’t reward ourselves properly,” CHS coach Alex Hickox told us. “This game, I tell ya. We do all the hard work and did not get rewarded for the efforts and the Seahawks score. Head scratcher.”

Leave it, though, to the Idaho-bound senior to save the day, though, as she took a feed from Leah Cammarano in stoppage time before halftime and pounded it home to tie things at 1-1 going into the halftime intermission. It made for a different conversation between the team and Hickox than was expected. “The players were definitely relieved about getting the equalizer and we wanted to make sure that we remain steadfast in connecting passes and finding areas out on the flanks. We also needed to be more aggressive at defending. We had 40 minutes to settle this and get past these Seahawks.”

So to the second half. Davidson sent the message right away about Cedarcrest being committed all right, firing a shot towards goal that Melanie Cammarano found and got two chances with – both times missing the goal. But Anacortes knew the Red Wolves were awake, and all of you know when the Red Wolves are awake, they’re a dangerous, explosive bunch. But the Seahawks, once again, figured out a way to overcome all that, and scored what they thought could be the game-winning goal in the 67th minute. But wait, this season can’t end so soon, not after their community came to their freshman teammate’s aid yesterday, right? Well, thanks to one of their budding juniors, CHS found new life.

Leah Cammarano had the ball with a couple of minutes to go and found Elisa Pirra, who cruised in on Anacortes’ net and made no mistake, tying this game at 2-2 and sending the CHS crowd into absolute celebration because they had a fighting chance. In the 85th minute, the girls were rewarded. Leah Cammarano, so good at helping her teammates deliver the goods in this one, saved her best for last, finding the “Mad Dog” once more and Davidson did the rest, ripping it home to send the Red Wolves onto a home match with Bellingham tomorrow night and Anacortes home after a very successful season. They finished well above .500 in a very tough Northwest Conference, and also, as we noted yesterday, beat a strong Kingco foe in Sammamish, a perennial power in Kingco that tied for top spot in the conference’s 2A division.
