From SnoValley Sports Journal:

Rhett Workman (facebook.com)

Sunday Post:

We have a dual headliner this morning involving a pair of young ladies from the lower Valley who dazzled yesterday in their respective sports, helping their teams post successful results. First, we hit the soccer pitch, where Carnation's Madelyn "Mad Dog" Davidson was once again a difference maker for Southeastern University of Florida's ladies. The junior scored both of her team's goals, including the game winner with about five minutes left in regulation, helping SEU sneak past New College of Florida last night 2-1 on the Florida Gulf Coast. Davidson, a junior with the Fire, had a total of seven shots recorded in the game, five on goal, as the Fire needed every last bit of the Cedarcrest HS grad's energy to score that much-needed win as Southeastern has struggled to start the season. WTG Mad Dog!

A WIN starts the 2024 Women’s Soccer Season for SEU

The new regular season kicks off in Thomasville, GA playing against Thomas University. It was a tight first half as the NightHawks scored first and the half finished 2-1 with goals scored by Ariadna Lozano and Madelyn Davidson. The second half kicked off with two goals by the NightHawks, bringing the score to 2-3 against SEU. Madelyn Davidson then scored the equalizing goal, and a final own goal by a NightHawk player gave SEU a 4-3 victory.

SEU Fire reports:

Women's Soccer 8/24/2024 4:45:00 PM Christopher MyersFire Rally to Edge NighthawksBox Score THOMASVILLE, Ga. – After playing to a 2-1 halftime lead, the Fire had to come from behind to beat the Thomas Night Hawks, 4-3, to take the season opener. The Fire gave up a goal just 14 seconds into the contest when Pearl Mortimer found the back of the net. Ariadna Lozano tied the game for SEU four minutes later from an assist by Alivia Knapp. Madelyn Davidson gave the Fire a 2-1 lead when she scored at the 40:18 mark, assisted by Amelia Hammond. The Night Hawks scored twice in just over a two-minute period midway through the second half, the second by Mortimer, to take a 3-2 lead. The Thomas lead lasted only six minutes, as Davidson scored her second goal of the game after tapping in a rebound off a Katie Carnes shot to tie the match for a third time, 3-3, at 71:50.Only 6:19 later, Southeastern pressured the Night Hawks again when Lozano belted her shot toward the goal and the rebound went to Vogel who sent it back in, only to have it knocked into the net by a Thomas defender for an own goal for what would be the winning score and 4-3 final tally. The SEU defense held Thomas to a single shot over the final 12 minutes of play. The Fire victory runs the program's win streak in the series with Thomas to eight-straight matches dating back to 2016. The teams last met in Thomasville on November 1, 2022, resulting in a 2-0 SEU win. The Fire win also is the first opening victory since two years to the day in a 2-0 road win over the Olivet Nazarene. Davidson took a team-high six shots and scored on two of her three shots on goal. Lozano had three shots. In net, keeper Madison Songer stopped nine of the 12 shots she faced over 90 minutes. Southeastern will enjoy the opening win for a week before its first home match next Saturday, September 3, at 1 p.m. against No. 13 Truett McConnell.

Rhett provides some highlights after stopping posts to SnoValley Sports Journal:

Good Sunday morning everyone. Even though I am retired at this point, I want to take a quick moment to thank all of you for your longtime and faithful support of my coverage the past 23 years here in the Valley. And as a token of my appreciation, I am going to do something nice for all of you here on Facebook starting this morning. What it is I think I will do for you guys is do a weekly rundown of the best performances from each week for our many local athletes playing collegiately this fall. Some of you know I despite having hung it up still compiled the fall schedules for our local college athletes and I figure, well, how about I put this to some good use and continue to let all of you know how kids are doing at the next level. So it is my plan at this point to probably do this once a week here on Sundays most likely but if we have something of major significance that deserves its own shoutout, I’ll do those as needed during the week. With that said, here are my Week “0” shoutouts and both of these came out of women’s action yesterday. On the soccer pitch, Florida’s Southeastern University got all it could handle in their season opener with Thomas University from Georgia, but Carnation’s Madelyn “Mad Dog” Davidson, who is a junior this fall with the Fire, scored two goals and helped her SEU squad hold off Thomas 4-3. Good stuff for the Mad Dog and I’m sure the Fan Club approves. Right, Phil? There was also a season debut for North Bend’s Friley Curtiss on the volleyball floor yesterday, as she played in both matches for her Southern Oregon University squad at a tournament in California. Curtiss, a sophomore this fall, pounded 10 kills and a dig in a five-set 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 25-27, 15-7 SOU win over Life Pacific, then dropped six more kills along with a second dig and a block pacing a three-set Raider sweep over Westcliff 25-17, 25-9, 25-9. Fantastic effort Friley and good job!Davidson is a Cedarcrest High School alum while Curtiss is a Mount Si High School alum. WTG ladies!

Conclusion of the 2023 Season Updates

Student First:

It was interesting this week to get a message from a local reporter who seems to be able to find things that others miss. He shared with me a link to Announcing 2023 CSC Academic All-District® M/W Soccer Teams – Academic All-America (academicallamerica.com). He then found the details on the criteria to be on the list and shared this link with me: Academic All-America® Nomination Criteria – Academic All-America (academicallamerica.com). It was incredible to get to see Madelyn’s name on this list of NCAA and NAIA athletes that made the cut.

A huge congratulations to all the players who made this list and point to the importance and remembrance that they are student athletes rather than athletic students.

Athlete Second:

Doing web searches for Madelyn, I ended up discovering this highlight video location for her that I didn’t realize but probably should have known was there based on the streaming services used being affiliated with Hudl: Madelyn Davidson – Hudl.

To wrap the season, let’s check out the season stats from around the league.

Found Rhett’s article and wanted to make sure to highlight him and his work for the kids of the Valley.

Wednesday news……Good Wednesday morning. We’ll take a look at gymnastics in a moment here this morning and preview Mount Si High School’s gymnastics season, but we have some news from college soccer and recognition for a trio of Valley college soccer players for their work not just on the field, but in the classroom as well. The College Sports Communicators of America, an organization that represents college sports information directors and their departments, yesterday named a large number of players from around the United States competing at all levels of college soccer to their Academic All-District teams, recognizing players for their academic and on-field excellence. Of those, women’s players Joelle Buck of Pacific Lutheran University and Madelyn “Mad Dog” Davidson from Southeastern University of Florida, and men’s player Sullivan Smith from Northwest Nazarene University are from the Valley.Buck, a senior this fall, is a Mount Si High School alum from Snoqualmie. Davidson, a sophomore this fall, is a Cedarcrest High School alum from Carnation and Smith, a junior this fall, is a MSHS alum from Fall City. The three will now be included for consideration in the Academic All-America recognition and that will be announced in about a month. Voting started for that following the release of this announcement yesterday.A congratulations from us to all three of these young athletes on their recognition. Examples once again of the young men and women your local schools are producing. Way to go all of you.

Update…(was looking to see if any news on the 2024 season yet but found an additional summary of 2023 season.

SOPHOMORE (2023): Davidson started all 19 games. Her strong offensive endeavors resulted in 11 goals with one assist. Eight multipoint games were fueled by three two-goal games, in two of those games her goals were the difference in a 2-0 win over Keiser and a 3-1 win over Ave Maria. 27 shots on goal were a product of 46 shots taken. This all resulted in First-Team All-Sun Conference honors. She was also successful academically with CSC Academic All-District, All-Sun Academic, and Daktronics Scholar-Athlete awards.

Final update to the 2023 Season.

Wow, what an exciting season and getting to have a home game in the second round of the National Finals too. The team got to play in the conference championship game. The team went to the last game for the regular season to be decided. Wow, what a year.

Once the final releases are out and such, I will look to put together a year in review post too. 🙂

Now onto the local reports coming from Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal:

Updates from October 12th, 2023: Thursday news…..

Soccer: “Mad Dog” delivers again for Southeastern-FL ladies in winAs we mentioned here last weekend, this 2023 season is becoming a special one for Carnation’s Madelyn Davidson, and she last night continued to show why she is fast becoming one of the most potent offensive threats in her entire league. The “Mad Dog” pocketed her sixth goal of the season in last night’s 3-1 Southeastern University of Florida women’s soccer win over in-state rival St. Thomas University of Florida, in a battle of nationally-ranked teams in the NAIA, down in Miami. Davidson, a sophomore who graduated from Cedarcrest High School in 2022, is leading the team in scoring – and is tied for fourth overall in the conference – with those six tallies, the sixth which was the Fire’s third goal of the night and pretty much cemented things for Southeastern in the second half. Davidson started and worked just 54 minutes with that goal coming on her lone shot on goal of the game; she recorded three shots total in the contest for the Fire, who moved to 7-3-1 on the season, 7-1-1 overall in the Sun Conference of NAIA.Southeastern is home on Saturday hosting another in-state rival, Warner University.

Updates from October 15th, 2023: Your Sunday college wrap…..

SoccerSoutheastern (FL) women 9, Warner 0: The Fire were on fire in this one, scoring seven first-half goals to cruise to a home win over the visiting in-state foe in Lakeland, FL. Carnation’s Madelyn “Mad Dog” Davidson scored twice in the span of 72 seconds in that seven-goal first half onslaught, and finished having logged those two goals on three shots in 30 minutes, with she and other starters getting early rest thanks to the very strong start. That rest proved useful for the sophomore, a Cedarcrest HS grad from 2022, as she was honored last night as the university’s athlete of the week prior to Southeastern’s football game with cross-town rival Thomas University. Davidson now has eight goals on the season, and leads the team in that category. This is an image on the scoreboard at Southeastern University’s stadium in Lakeland, FL, last night, where prior to the school’s football game with local rival Thomas University, SEU recognized Carnation’s Madelyn Davidson as the university’s athlete of the week. Davidson, a sophomore, has eight goals on the season for the Fire women’s soccer team, adding two more yesterday for SEU in a 7-0 win over in-state foe Warner. (Courtesy photo)

Updates from October 19th, 2023: Thursday news….

Soccer: “Mad Dog” tally not enough for Fire women in road lossA goal by Carnation’s Madelyn “Mad Dog” Davidson proved not to be enough for Southeastern University of Florida’s women’s soccer team, as they took a road loss against a solid league opponent yesterday.Opposing Keiser rallied from that early 1-0 hole to score a 2-1 home win in West Palm Beach, FL, over the Fire dropping Southeastern to 8-4-1, 8-2-1 in league play within the NAIA Sun Conference. Davidson, a sophomore and 2022 Cedarcrest High School alum, got the ball from a teammate in the 13th minute and as two defenders were coming close, Davidson was able to flick a shot towards the upper left corner of the Keiser goal, and it hit its target, giving the “Mad Dog” her team-leading ninth goal of the season. The host Seahawks though responded with a late goal in the first half, then won it on a goal with 15 minutes left in regulation time.Davidson finished having played 81 minutes of the game with the goal being on the lone shot on goal she had in the contest, one of only four the team had all game, so a good defensive effort as well by Keiser in this one to limit the offense for Southeastern to just Davidson’s early tally. Southeastern is home on Saturday night for Senior Night against Webber International.

SEU Fire News: 3-2 Victory over Ave Maria

LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern had to rally from a halftime deficit to pick up its sixth win of the season Saturday night. A pair of goals by Madelyn Davidson helped the Fire come up with a 3-1 win over Ave Maria, scoring three times in the final 39 minutes to move to 6-1-1 in Sun Conference play. "The key to the second half was just trying to get some movement and get moving for the game overall," said coach Caleb Roberts. "We started a little slow after travel and a quick turnaround, but got our legs under us at halftime and recenter where we wanted to be." Ave Maria (3-4-4, 1-4-3 SUN) got on the board first in the ninth minute of play and made that tally stand all the way until the 51st minute. Davidson's first goal of the game came sprinting on a breakaway after a pass from Naira Lopez which was finished to the far post for her third of the season. Davidson scored again in the 77th minute when Lopez fed her the ball at the top of the box from the right wing and snuck it just under the crossbar. Ariadna Lozano hammered home a one-time feed with her left foot from inside of six yards from Karissa King with 5:57 to play for the game's final score. Micaela Owen made three saves in the win. The Fire will be back on the road Wednesday at St. Thomas.

SnoValley Sports Journal News:

This season is turning into a special one for Carnation’s Madelyn Davidson, and last night, the “Mad Dog” made her presence felt for Southeastern University of Florida’s women’s soccer team as she piloted a come-from-behind win.The sophomore, a Cedarcrest High School grad, scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 77th minute, as Southeastern rallied from a 1-0 hole early and handled in-state rival Ave Maria 3-1. Davidson’s two goals move her to five on the season, as she asserted control of the goal-scoring lead this season amongst Fire players with last night’s performance. Davidson finished having logged 82 minutes, with four shots, three on goal. Post Game interview and Players of the Week

Yesterday I received a message from a local writer of the SnoValley Sports Journal that he found a YouTube video of the post game interviews and thought I would share them here with you.

Post-game Interviews:

Postgame interviews with Coach Caleb Roberts, Micaela the Goalie, and Madelyn

Then I noticed a post from Sun Conference for the players of the week:

And the Snoqualmie Valey Sports Journal posted something about it too:

College conference recognition for the “Mad Dog”: A fantastic Saturday for one Carnation product earned her recognition from her college’s conference yesterday.Southeastern University of Florida women’s soccer player Madelyn “Mad Dog” Davidson was named the NAIA Sun Conference’s women’s soccer offensive player of the week on the strength of her two-goal effort this past Saturday for Southeastern’s Fire; those two goals were the lone goals of the contest as the Fire beat nationally-ranked Keiser University 2-0 in an upset at home in Florida. Davidson, a sophomore, is a 2022 Cedarcrest HS grad, and the recognition we believe is the first she has had at the college level for her efforts on the field. Good stuff and we know her friends and family are thrilled with the news.Southeastern hosts another Florida rival, St. Thomas University, tomorrow evening at home in Lakeland, which is between Tampa and Orlando along Interstate 4 and should be familiar to baseball fans as the spring training home for the Detroit Tigers. Game time here in the Valley is at 4:00 p.m.
